Devils into third place with BMD win over Capras

Norths clawed into third place on a congested BMD Premiership ladder with a hard-fought 18-4 win over CQ Capras at Bishop Park last night.

This game was built on the attacking flair that created three tries and a defensive wall that limited the Capras to one try in an important game for both teams.

The win moved the Devils to a 3-2 win-loss record as coach Meg Ward’s team continues to fight for a maiden finals berth with a schedule that includes a clash with the Falcons on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.

Two of the Devils’ three tries last night came from the combination of five-eighth Georgia Hannaway and fullback Montaya Hudson.

Hannaway set up the first try in the 17th minute when she sprinted from halfway, racing 30 metres before a sharp pass to Hudson moving down the left touchline.

Hudson repaid the favour 13 minutes later when her excellent offload started Hannaway on a short, winding burst to the line to put the Devils ahead 12-4 at halftime.

The final try came in the 54th minute when the Devils’ co-captains combined – hooker Jada Ferguson’s pass to Netta Nu’uausala enabled the forward to score near the posts.

Jocelyn Kelleher converted the three tries as the Devils moved behind the unbeaten Mackay Cutters and Tweed Seagulls on the table with four games until the finals.

“The Capras had shown their talent when they beat Burleigh last weekend so we knew this would be a tough game,” Ward said.

“It’s been tough to get a handle on the competition with new teams this season and some changes in the off-season but we’re getting a clearer picture now.

“It’s a tight competition and every game is important so that’s a valuable win.

“We have to make the most of our opportunities especially when we’re playing at home.”
