When Connor Broadhurst addressed his teammates after training last night, he was the same relaxed and low-key player who kept the coolest head in one of Norths Devils’ most desperate moments.

Broadhurst spoke last night of reaching 100 games for the Devils. He will become only the seventh Devil to reach the century in the Queensland Cup era (since 1996) when he runs on to the field against Souths Logan Magpies at Davies Park tomorrow.

There have been multiple highlights in Broadhurst’s Norths career.

They included the 2021 and 2022 premierships, in which Broadhurst played a crucial role.

In the 2021 grand final – as the Devils sought their first premiership in 23 years – Broadhurst ignited the winning try with a high kick that fell for winger Jon Reuben and passed through another three sets of hands before it returned to Broadhurst.

He then put in a second kick which bobbled for Michael Molo to score the most famous try in the Devils’ modern era.

After that, Broadhurst had to take the conversion because regular kicker Tyrone Roberts had left the field. Broadhurst hadn’t practised for weeks but, with Wynnum Manly’s relocated “Chook Pen” delivering free life advice, Broadhurst calmly slotted the kick from near the sideline.

It’s that coolness and consistency that has marked a career that has spread well beyond the Devils and to Burleigh, Capras, Wynnum and Ipswich in a career of 217 games.

The school teacher captured a premiership with Burleigh in his second season before his success with the Devils.

“This is first club I’ve played 100 games for and, in many ways, Norths feels like home for me,” Broadhurst said.

“I’ve always felt welcomed here and it’s been a place of good memories over the years.”

Broadhurst has called a few places home since he grew up in Wowan near childhood friend and former Queensland State of Origin winger Corey Oates.

He would move to Bluff and Blackwater as a child before his league journey took him south to Parramatta, north to the Gold Coast Titans and eventually to Burleigh.

Broadhurst joined the Devils for the 2019 season after speaking with coach Rohan Smith. He had noticed Smith’s entertaining style of play in 2018 when the Devils toppled Broadhurst’s Capras.

He became one of the Devils’ most reliable and versatile players, mixing between the centres and halves depending on his coaches’ needs.

Broadhurst will again be important for Norths as they seek a third consecutive win in the showdown with the Magpies.
