The old foes will battle again today in a Hostplus Cup grand final expected to draw a huge crowd to Kayo Stadium.
Norths Devils will take on Redcliffe Dolphins in a decider that brings together teams that first played in 1960.
There was an unofficial game in 1959 when the Dolphins were preparing to play in the Brisbane Rugby League competition. The Devils were led that day by captain-coach Clive Churchill.
More than 60 years later, the rivalry remains strong between the northern neighbours which are now affiliated with the Dolphins NRL club.
The links between the grand final squads overlap – seven Devils players have previously played for Redcliffe.
Dolphins’ assistant coach Kevin Neighbour was Norths’ co-coach in 2022 when the Devils defeated Redcliffe in the grand final.
Norths and Redcliffe are playing against each other for the fourth time this season – the Devils lead the ledger 2-1 following their 46-18 qualifying final win three weeks ago.
“This will be a completely different game. It’s a grand final and it will be very tough,” Devils coach Dave Elliott said.
“We have enormous respect for Redcliffe and for how hard they have worked. Their win (over Northern Pride) in Cairns last week was very impressive.”
The Dolphins stunned the minor premiers, ending their 13-game winning streak and booking a berth in the decider.
The Devils defeated PNG Hunters 46-30 to earn a grand final berth and now chase their third premiership in four seasons.
The Devils have won 15 premierships since they were formed in 1933.
“There’s a lot of history in this club and we’re very aware of those who have gone before us,” Devils halfback Jack Ahearn said.
Hooker Kierran Moseley will lead the Devils into today’s match. Moseley, Ahearn and centre Jacob Gagan are the only survivors from the Norths’ team that won the 2022 grand final.
