Norths Devils have set up an important home BMD Premiership clash with CQ Capras on Saturday night after a frustrating afternoon at Wynnum Manly last Saturday.
The Devils lost 18-16 to the Seagulls after the home team scored a try with four minutes remaining at Kougari Oval.
Norths fought valiantly in the final minutes to regain the lead for a third time in the match.
Coach Meg Ward’s team is gaining a reputation as one of the most determined teams of a BMD Premiership that has two points separating teams placed second to sixth on the ladder.
The Devils are fifth and realise that they would have finished the round in second place if not for the Seagulls’ late try on an unseasonably warm autum afternoon.
The Devils fell behind 10-0 after the Seagulls crossed in the 13th and 22nd minutes of the match.
But co-captain Jada Ferguson ignited the Devils on the stroke of halftime with a weaving dummy-half run that caught Wynnum Manly off guard, crossing for a try in front of the home team’s Chook Pen.
Portia Bourke’s try in the opening minutes of the second half enabled the Devils to draw level at 10-all before Wynnum Manly crossed again 10 minutes later, tiptoeing down the right-hand touchline.
But this Devils team continues to fight back, taking the lead for the first time when Becky Davidson scored her fourth try of the season with 14 minutes remaining.
Jocelyn Kelleher’s conversion gave the Devils the treasured lead before the gripping finish.
The Capras will arrive at Bishop Park on Saturday in eighth position but with the confidence of a win over the Burleigh Bears in wet conditions in Rockhampton last weekend.
