Norths showcased the energy of their new-look BMD Premiership team when they almost stunned premiers Burleigh Bears on the road yesterday.
The final scoreline of 28-18 in Burleigh’s favour does not reflect the Devils’ early surge that had the Bears on the ropes.
Despite running into a strong wind, the Devils rattled up three tries in the opening 20 minutes.
Two of those came to centre Becky Davidson as the Devils found space on their left side in a positive start to Meg Ward’s career as head coach.
But Burleigh began clawing their way back through leader Zahara Temara and her fellow NRLW players, posting vital tries in the 57th and 63rd minutes.
The Devils were left to rue mistakes that lifted the pressure on Burleigh in a game decided five tries to four.
Davidson grabbed her third try as the Devils were rewarded for their effort in the final minutes.
“There were plenty of positive moments and we showed our intent as a team but Burleigh are the premiers for a reason and they made the most of their opportunities,” Ward said.
“I was proud of the energy and commitment that we showed and we can only improve as the season goes on.”
Ward has assembled a team with plenty of new faces following plenty of changes in the BMD Premiership with two new teams added this season.
That has sparked a bunch of player movements that have made the season difficult to predict.
There is no tougher opening than meeting Burleigh on the road but the Devils were not overawed and their punch and determination were good signs for the season ahead.
Co-captains Netta Nu’uausala and Jada Ferguson were strong in the middle of a forward pack that aimed up against Burleigh’s quality line-up.
Halves Georgia Hannaway and Shauna Barnham directed a backline that caused serious problems for the Bears with their willingness to run the ball to the line.
The Devils led 14-6 after 20 minutes but the Bears were aided by the skill of Lauren Brown who landed her first four attempts at goal.
The Devils return home on Saturday night for a clash with the Tigers at Bishop Park. Kick-off will be 5.30pm.
