TAFE Queensland and Norths Devils Announce A Winning Partnership

Applications for the 2024 Norths Devils TAFE at School Program open 9am Monday 17 July. To apply, visit tafeapply.com and use code TQB24SPORT. Read about the program below:

The Norths Devils and TAFE Queensland are excited to inspire young rugby league enthusiasts in Brisbane to invest in their passion for sport, by joining the Norths Devils TAFE at School Program in 2024. This collaborative program will offer year 10 and 11 high school players with a specialised rugby league coaching education program while completing their senior secondary education. The program is designed to create a pathway to employment in the sports industry.

Students will undertake the Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching with a specialisation in rugby league. The curriculum covers a diverse range of topics, including; essential coaching techniques, game analysis, strength and conditioning for sport, player development strategies, and sports management skills. This combination of practical training and theory-based learning is essential to the well-rounded education that Norths Devils and TAFE Queensland are committed to.

Students will attend the program 1-day a week at the Norths Devils Leagues Club in Nundah. The sessions will take place one day a week throughout the two-year period, replacing a regular school day, which allows students to be fully immersed in a specialised program within their normal learning structure. Students will also undertake regular strength and conditioning, rugby league-specific training, and athlete development workshops as part of the program.

Completing the program will allow students to contribute up to 8 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits and contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), providing a competitive advantage for further academic pursuits.

Troy Rovelli, CEO at the North Devils, spoke to the quality of the program in his statement, “Norths Devils are thrilled to partner with TAFE Queensland to bring the sport coaching certificates to Nundah.  This collaboration offers students a remarkable opportunity to undergo specialised coach training with a strong focus on rugby league with the dynamic environment of a semi-professional club. The Devils’ unwavering dedication to excellence across all aspects of Rugby League is further exemplified through this exciting alliance with TAFE Queensland.”

Jesse O’Hara, Manager, Academy of Sport Partnerships at TAFE Queensland

echoed this sentiment, “Norths represent the rugby league heartland of the northern corridor of Brisbane. As a pathway club, players in the catchment look at Norths as stepping stone in their development on the field. This partnership takes development beyond the white line, signifying the importance for players to grow themselves off the field as well, blending education and sport as a tool for success.”

Applications for the Norths Devils TAFE at School Program will open on July 17, 2023, and the program is set to commence in the first term of 2024. Students who will be commencing in year 10 or 11 in 2024, who have a passion for rugby league and a desire to pursue a career in the sports industry are encouraged to apply.
