Devils ready for decider

Norths Devils have rounded out their Intrust Super Cup grand final preparations with a team barbecue as they prepare for a rare trip to Redcliffe for today’s decider against Wynnum Manly.

It’s been more than four years since the Devils played at Moreton Daily Stadium given the quirks of the draw.

Rohan Smith has never coached at the ground despite leading the Devils to a 44-23 record since he took over as coach for the 2018 season.

The last time the Devils played at Redcliffe, Wynnum’s Delouise Hoeter was in the Devils’ backline and Origin prop Francis Molo – the brother of Norths starting prop Michael – was in the forward pack. The Dolphins halves were Benji Marshall and Tyson Gamble, who featured in four games for the Devils this season, while Matt Lodge started.

The Devils will today board a bus for their first grand final since 2010 after completing preparations with a training session on Friday night and a light run at Bishop Park yesterday.

“It’s been a good week and there’s plenty of excitement around the club and its supporters so it’s been great to be part of that,” Devils coach Rohan Smith said.

The Devils have made only one change to the team that defeated Burleigh Bears in last weekend’s preliminary final with Broncos backrower Brendan Piakura ruled out following a head knock.

That means that all 17 men who wear the Norths jersey today signed a Devils contract this season, underlining the strength of a program that is affiliated with the Brisbane Broncos.

Wynnum Manly and Souths Logan Magpies are also affiliated with the Broncos.

Devils hooker Danny Levi, who was signed by the Broncos after shining with the Devils earlier this season, said he hadn’t been in touch with the Broncos squad members in the Wynnum team ahead of the game.

“I just prefer to concentrate on what we’re doing as a team to prepare so I haven’t been in touch with them this week,” Levi said.

“We’ve had a good week and we’re ready to play.”
