Broncos hitout prepares Devils for trial

A sharp session against the Brisbane Broncos this week has helped to prepare the Norths Devils for their opening pre-season match with Wynnum Manly Seagulls tonight.

The matches featuring Intrust Super Cup, Under 20s and Under 18s have been moved from Wynnum Juniors to Bribie Island after the February downpour took its toll on Brisbane’s footy fields.

But the rain didn’t stop the Devils’ Cup team from training with the Broncos on Tuesday in an opposed session at Red Hill.

Broncos veteran Darius Boyd said his teammates took some time to adjust their defence to the Devils’ distinctive style honed under coach Rohan Smith.

Smith was happy with the session which continues on a Devils’ pre-season schedule that began more than three months ago.

“We’re ready to play this first game and it will be a good chance for our players to get back into footy,” Smith said.

“We’ve got three trial games planned and each one will be important to us leading into the season.”

The Devils will unveil some new faces tonight including former Redcliffe backs Bryce Donovan and Tony Tumusa while popular forward Carne Doyle-Manga returns after his stint in the UK last season.

Stedman Lafau also returns to the forward pack this season, adding more experience to a Devils team that finished with a 15-8 win-loss record last year.

The Devils will host Redcliffe at home next Saturday before travelling to the Sunshine Coast to play the Falcons in two weeks in the final pre-season match.
