Will Jimmy the Jet get his Origin lift-off or will he have a Devil of a time?
It’s one of the big questions from a much-anticipated Intrust Super Cup match when the Norths Devils host the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at Bishop Park this Sunday. The Seagulls lineup will include Broncos star James “The Jet” Roberts.
The centre was left out of the Broncos’ 17 to play the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland on Saturday night, leaving him in line to play with Broncos feeder club Wynnum.
This time last year, Roberts was preparing for his NSW State of Origin debut.
Blues coach Brad Fittler hasn’t shut the door on Roberts’ chances for this season despite his fall from the Broncos’ top team.
The Sunday afternoon match shapes as a cracker at Bishop Park as the fourth-placed Devils (7 wins, 3 losses) take on the third-placed Seagulls (8-2).
Both teams will include their Broncos squad regulars with the Devils taking the likes of in-form halfback Sean O’Sullivan and winger Herbie Farnworth against Seagulls forward Patrick Carrigan and outside back Richie Kennar.
The Devils will also feature Broncos squad members Ethan Bullemor, Troy Dargan and Jordan Riki while regular centre Gehamat Shibasaki will be on duty with the Broncos in Auckland.
O’Sullivan and Dargan have had great starts to their season, with more than 10 try assists between them showcasing their ability to lead the Devils around the park.
Meanwhile winger Herbie Farnworth has racked up 78 points in seven games, including eight tries, making him one to watch in 2019.
Ethan Bullemor has had a breakout season in 2019 after making his ISC debut late last year – so far scoring five tries including multiple individual efforts from halfway.
Youngster Jordan Riki has been rewarded with six appearances in the top squad this year, following a strong season with the 2018 Norths Under20s premiership team and representing the junior Kiwis.
But one of the Devils’ own shapes as a key player – Queensland Residents centre Connor Broadhurst may yet mark his old Gold Coast Titans colleague Roberts.
Broadhurst has been in excellent form, returning from representative duty with another quality performance for the Devils in last Saturday night’s 42-18 win over Mackay.
Broadhurst was in action from the opening whistle as the Devils pushed the ball to him on the third tackle of the game, enabling the strong left centre to power through a 40-metre run before he put forward Nixon Putt over for the first try.
NAB will be giving away a fully signed Brisbane Broncos Jersey on the day, as well as a signed Norths Jersey, as part of their free raffle.
