Norths forward Guy Williams will notch another milestone in his long career today when he meets his old team Central Queensland at Bishop Park.
Williams will play his 232nd Intrust Super Cup match – moving him into equal sixth place and 38 matches behind Troy Lindsay’s all-time record.
But Williams isn’t as interested in his milestones as he is in talking about his new team – today marks his 16th game for a Devils team that is starting to find its attacking groove.
“When I moved down (from Rockhampton at the end of last year) I wasn’t too sure if I was going to play again but I’m glad I did – this has been a really enjoyable year,” Williams said.
“I’ve really enjoyed the variety of our game. It’s about playing what you see in front of you, pushing up and making the most of our opportunities.”
Coach Rohan Smith came to Bishop Park before this season with the intention to play attacking football.
He knew it may take time for his players to become familiar with the style but it’s been worth the wait for Norths supporters.
It was most evident last Saturday afternoon when the Devils weathered 19 consecutive tackles – and 18 in the their own half – against the Bears at Burleigh.
When Norths regained the ball from a 20-metre restart, they scored an entertaining try from that set, pushing left and then right to score in the corner.
“In that situation, some teams may decide to get the ball back, take a few easy tackles and work towards a kick into touch to get a break,” Williams said.
“That’s not how we play. We want to make opportunities in attack regardless of where we are.”
Williams, who reached NRL level during a stint with the Broncos, know that the Devils face a tough match today despite the Capras’ position on the ladder.
The visitors are shooting for three consecutive wins for the first time since 2009.
Williams was part of that Capras team and he knows that today’s match presents a serious challenge for Norths.
“These guys really play for each other and we saw that last week when they beat Souths despite falling behind,” Williams said.
“This is a big game for us.”
