Celebrating 85 Years of the Norths Devils

When the Norths Devils pulled off one of the most stunning coups in Australian rugby league history, little did they know what they were starting.

Clive Churchill – the “Little Master” and a rugby league Immortal – shocked the sport in 1959 when he quit the South Sydney Rabbitohs to become a Devil. With Churchill as captain-coach, the Devils ended a 19-year premiership drought in 1959. That started a run that remains the most remarkable in Brisbane’s rugby league history.

The Devils won six consecutive premierships. They won eight premierships in 11 years. No team has come close to it before or since. Their sky blue, navy blue and gold jersey during that era would become the most famous in Brisbane’s rugby league history.

To honour that era, our players and the legacy they left, Norths will produce a special heritage jersey for the final round of the season which is a home match against Ipswich on Sunday August 26th at 3pm.

The jersey will contain the names of all 1275 men who have worn our jersey in first grade since 1933. This is a one-off production that will mark the most famous era in Brisbane’s rugby league history.
